HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-10-09 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes October 9,2023 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees:Nancy Fisher-Allison, John Shafer, Alethea Fleming Absent:Courtney Orrock Library Attendees:Michelle Hanna, Trish Wilson. Stacy Paull, Diana Farnsworth Absent:Sydney Brady, Jeff Vogel Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:02 a.m. by Nancy. Approval of Minutes Minutes from September 2023 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Alethea, second by John. Manager Updates Diana • Teen programming resumed this month. 8 teens attended the most recent planning meeting. • We are recruiting volunteers for the Haunted Walk and Winter Wonderland. Diana is leading the Library side of the Haunted Walk and Jeff is leading Winter Wonderland. • Observe the Moon night is coming up. The solar eclipse is on the 14th. We have eclipse glasses to hand out. We already gave 150 to the High School. • ASD student ID's have been updated in our system. • ASD Libraries: the high school library is functioning;the elementary libraries are still regrouping from all the changes. The middle school has a para-professional opening the library for 2-3 lunch periods per week. • Adult programs are in full swing. Brent Lindquist facilitated a program on Fahrenheit 451, resulting in a small but very engaged crowd. • This Wednesday is the second annual Sherlock Holmes radio drama, presented by the local Sherlock Holmes group in the CMR. • Next week is Adult Crafts night, and next weekend is Observe the Moon night. Stacy • The boat is slowly being installed. The shelving in the boat will look like the school library shelving. • Storytimes started back up last Friday. We'll be adding a Tuesday storytime in November. Trish • The staff In-Service day is this Friday. • Geek Girl Con was yesterday. Trish participated in a panel discussion called "Having fun isn't hard when you have a library card". • The tech grant supplies are coming in for the first class, which is this Saturday. • The book club will be run by the Library in the new year. We will make sure books are available and publicity is strong. • There is a kickoff meeting for Adventure Day planning at the end of this month. Partnership Updates • Foundation o John: John wasn't able to attend the last meeting, but can report that in September the foundation lost money with the stock market downturn. o Hoopla has used 93%of its budget as of August. The Foundation voted to increase the budget for Hoopla through the end of the year. • Friends of the Library o Nancy: The Friends' income is less than projected. o The recent book sale on September 16th brought in over $500. o The FOL is going to send a letter asking for matching funds donations. A member has offered to match up to $10k in donations to the Friends. • Manieri o The Manieri board will be looking at their 2024 budget at the next meeting. o Second Sunday and Jazz Lectures continue to be popular events. Ongoing Business • There was no update to the Board Member search. The board will ask Jeff about this next month. New Business • Nancy would like to talk about where APL can help the schools bridge the gap between the school library and the public library, whether it is help with research, resource sharing, teaching space, laptop labs, teen space, etc. at our next meeting. • Alethea would like to discuss the possibility of having Narcan (naloxone) on site for emergencies. The meeting was closed by Nancy at 10:01 a.m. The next meeting is November 13 at 9 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room.
