HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-09-11 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes September 11,2023 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees:Nancy Fisher-Allison, John Shafer, Courtney Orrock, Alethea Fleming Library Attendees:Michelle Hanna, Jeff Vogel, Trish Wilson Absent:Sydney Brady, Diana Farnsworth Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. by Courtney. Approval of Minutes Minutes from August 2023 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Alethea, second by John. Manager Updates Jeff • Our new children's librarian is Stacy Paull. Her start date is September 18. • The City has a new Public Works Director. • Our new page is Logan Scamfer. He has been with us for a couple of weeks. • Budget Update: our budgeting software crashed, causing everyone's budget work to be erased. Everyone is re-entering their budget information. • The conference last weekend was really helpful. The topic was Conversational Leadership, led by David White and hosted at the Whidbey Institute. • Programming: September is our annual pause in Children's and Teen programming, to allow a rest from summer reading, back to school frenzy, and a prep time for the fall. All programs resume in October. • This Saturday is the Harry Smith program with the Museum. • Jeff and Diana met with Underwood & Associates regarding the teen space. Bidding for this project will have to go through the City and must be awarded to the lowest bidder. • The Skagit Library directors meeting will be in person this Thursday. Directors will talk about why there isn't a county-wide library system. Trish • On October 20th we'll have a program on the Eclipse, hosted by the Island County Astronomical Society. • The haunted walk is coming up! • Genre Day planning meetings are being scheduled. Reminder: Adventure Day is February 17 • Diana and Rebecca finished the A-Town publication. • A new series "What the Tech?" is scheduled to begin in October. This series is funded by a grant and presented in partnership with the Senior center and the Family center. • Diana is working to "genre-fy" the teen collection. • We are working to catalog our "Library of Things" available for checkout. • The children's book weeding has been completed! The same weeding volunteers will be coming in to weed the teen books soon. • Trish will be attending Geek-Girl-Con in Seattle on October 8th as a panelist. Partnership Updates • Foundation o John: there is a proposal to vote to increase the community engagement budget (outreach) from $2,000 to $3,500. o The Hoopla presentation by Diana and Rebecca was well received. The costs of Hoopla have increased and will go over budget by the end of the year so the Foundation will be voting on whether to increase the budget or have the Library reduce the usage threshold on Hoopla. • Friends of the Library o Nancy: The FOL meeting is this week so there is nothing new to report from last month's meeting. o There are new non-profit rules from the Secretary of State that the FOL will be looking into. o Hal sent out the latest Budget vs Actuals for discussion on Thursday's meeting. The FOL is behind in revenue this year. o The FOL will talk to Trish regarding aligning displays in the FriendShop with the ones in the Library. • Manieri o Jeff: Second Sunday Jazz continues, Jazz Lectures have resumed for the season. Ongoing Business • The Board voted to adopt the WLA Code of Ethics • Christina has submitted her resignation from the Board. Jeff will initiate a new Board Member search through HR. • The Board reaffirmed their appreciation of Christina's contributions to the Board in the last 3.5 years. • Courtney will be absent from the next meeting, Nancy will lead the meeting. John will be absent in November. New Business The meeting was closed by Courtney at 9:54 a.m. The next meeting is October 9 at 9 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room.
