HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-01-09 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes January 9,2023 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees:Nancy Fisher-Allison,Alethea Fleming,Christina Hansen,Courtney Orrock,John Shafer Library Attendees:Sydney Brady,Michelle Hanna,Jeff Vogel, Leslie Wilson Absent: Diana Farnsworth Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m.by Christina. Approval of Minutes Minutes from November 2022 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Alethea, second by Nancy. Manager Updates Jeff • Budget Update:we spent about 95%of our budget in 2022. • End of year statistics(rounded): 0 164,000 checkouts(up from last year) 0 64,000 digital checkouts(down from last year) 0 6,000 people attended Library programs 0 100,000 people came into the library o $3.8 million saved by checking out books from the library instead of purchasing them • Programs update: o Maritime programming is back with Second Saturday programs scheduled in January and February. January's program is presented by Andy Schwenk. o We have resumed Saturday morning Yoga with Jhana and increased it to 2 Saturdays per month. Last week there were 20 people in attendance. o PFLAG has a program called My Otherland coming up on Wednesday,January 18 • Jeff will be attending the Washington Library Director's conference in February. It will be held in Seattle. Leslie • Elf storytime was a huge hit,as usual. We gave away 100 books purchased from Watermark Bookstore thanks to a generous gift from the Maxsons. • Class visits to the Library have resumed with the Montessori and Samish Longhouse schools who came in December. • Noon Years Eve: 61 friends and family came to play balloon toss,have snacks,and participate in the photo booth. It was very popular and we will definitely do this event again. • Stay and Play is back twice a month • January 13th is Steam Kit play day where we'll have most of our steam kits available for families to try out. • Fidalgo Rotary is sponsoring Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for all kids in the City under 5 years of age. The children's staff can help families get signed up for it. • WonderBooks: Thanks to a grant from HF Sinclair,we have ordered 30 stem-related books. A few of them came with immersive goggles. We will be ordering about 2 dozen more in the near future. Diana • Fantasy Day is February 25. There will be multiple volunteer opportunities so contact Diana if you're interested in participating. Sydney • All went well while Sydney was out of the office recuperating from foot surgery. • Staff reviews are completed. • We were able to stay open through the snow and ice storm. This was great because a lot of other local businesses and other Skagit libraries were closed. Committee Reports • Foundation o The Secretary of the Foundation has retired but all other officers remain the same. o The Board approved the financial audit that was performed in November and has voted to do an audit every other year from now on(instead of every 3 years). • Friends of the Library o The current Board members are: ■ Kandy Dubuque and Peter Allen,co-presidents ■ Rachelle Kierulff,vice president ■ Susan Rooks, secretary ■ Hal Rooks,treasurer ■ Kay O'Connell, emeritus ■ Cissy Fisher,volunteer coordinator ■ Lesley Blaser ■ Jenifer Gorlach o Lesley Blaser is the media coordinator. FOL has allocated$1000 for social media advertising. • Manieri o Regular programming continues with Second Sunday concerts and third Thursday lectures. New programming this year:Jazz Walk on March 3 to coincide with the monthly Art Walk downtown. By-Laws • The Board discussed the by-laws during the last month and changes were suggested. The document was edited during the meeting with tracked changes.It will be formatted this coming month and the final document voted on during the February meeting. The meeting was closed by Christina at 10:15 a.m. The next meeting is February 13 at 9 a.m.in person in the Community Meeting Room.
