HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-10-10 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTEFr PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes October 10,2022 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees:Nancy Fisher-Allison, Christina Hansen, John Shafer (via ZOOM) Absent:Alethea Fleming, Courtney Orrock Library Attendees:, Jeff Vogel, Leslie Wilson, Diana Farnsworth, Michelle Hanna Absent: Sydney Brady Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:03 a.m.by Christina. Approval of Minutes Minutes from September 2022 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Nancy, second by Christina. Manager Updates Jeff • The Library Staff had an in-service day on October 7. Dustin did a great de-escalation training in the morning and Sydney organized a fun team-building activity with a Seattle theater group in the afternoon. • City Council is tonight and will consist of presenting next year's budget and voting on the ASD Student Cards program for the year. • The budget was adjusted for Library,Parks,EMS,and the Cemetery in order to pay for a shortfall for a City paving project. • Incidents with 2 regular patrons resulted in trespassing both for one year. • The La Conner Library Director was dismissed from his position recently and one of the Board members was ultimately hired as a permanent replacement.The new La Conner Library building will be opening soon. Diana • October 1st was our first monthly Yoga class in the CMR. Jhana led 16 people through a one-hour yoga routine. It was well-received and will continue on the first Saturday of the month through December. If there is enough demand,we may increase it to two Saturdays per month in the new year. • Observe the Moon night was a big success with 125 people in attendance. • We started a very popular high school creative writing group that meets weekly.The middle schoolers have expressed an interest in having their own writing group also. • Several middle school classes visited the Library last week and more will be visiting this week. • The Haunted Walk is coming up soon,in partnership with the Parks Dept. The APL portion of the walk is sponsored by the Foundation. • We'll be hosting one adult event per month through the end of the year,starting with our Humanities WA program"The River That Made Seattle"on October 26. In November we will feature"Food through Film". More information coming on that. • On October 5 our local Sherlock Holmes group hosted a program in the CMR titled"Turn Back The Clock". It was very well attended with a mix of regulars and new people. • ASD Student cards should be voted on tonight at City Council and in place within a week or two. They were temporarily delayed due to staff turnover at ASD. • The Marketing department is reviving its quarterly calendar/newsletter and the printing is funded by the Foundation. • We have plans to expand the Teen Resource area to include books, snacks,and hygiene products. Leslie • October programs started with a bang! October 111 was our author visit with Nicki McClure at the Depot. • Last Tuesday was our first Family Place program since 2019. All available spaces filled quickly and we have a waiting list. The overall goal of Family Place Libraries is to develop a family friendly environment by transforming libraries into community centers for literacy,early childhood development,parent education and engagement,family support and community information. • Our annual Storybook Pumpkin Patch will be coming later this month. • Weekly storytimes are back starting this week with Mike and Cheri Noyes reading a Firefighter book.Fridays at 10 and 10:45 a.m.in the CMR. • The tween group meets next week. We will have fun activities,games,book talks,and hopefully a book club. • Halloween storytime is at the end of the month. • HF Sinclair awarded another$13,600 for Children&Teens.$10,000 will be for a Technology Learning Lab for Teens and$3,600 will purchase 3 dozen STEM read-along-audio books for the Children's collection.The books range from early reader through 3rd-4th grade reading levels. • The Noon Kiwanis Club recently donated$5,000 to the Children/Teen departments following a grant Leslie and Diana wrote.The funds will be for Summer Reading,the Teen Advisory Group,and other programs. Committee Reports • Foundation o The dividends in August from the Swain bequest were$3,000. It lines up with the expectation of $36,000 per year o There was a brick-laying ceremony on September 24th. 3 families were able to attend. • Friends of the Library o The Friends board sent out notes of appreciation to their volunteers containing candy and/or coupons for free books. o The FOL applied to participate in"4%Friday"in 2023 at the Skagit Valley Co-op. • Manieri o Second Sunday concerts continue to bring in a good crowd. Yesterday was"Cal Trio"at Buxton's. The concerts are scheduled at Buxton's through December. o Jazz Lectures resume October 20 in the Community Meeting Room on the third Thursday at 2 p.m.This month features Dmitri Matheny exploring Syncopated Rhythm:Jazz and Dance. Unfinished Business: • Nancy:Strategic Initiative 2022-2023 o This continues to be of interest to the Board. Nancy will reach out to her contacts to see if there are any opportunities available. Board Actions: • The Board review of the ByLaws has been postponed to the January 2023 meeting. • Annual Director review will likely take place in November so the Board can present their review to the Mayor in December. The meeting was closed by Christina at 10:07 a.m. The next meeting is November 14 at 9 a.m.in person in the Community Meeting Room.
