HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-20 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD Minutes of June 20,2017 PRESENT Dave Duck,Nick Alphin, Judy Weathers and Diane Munce. CALL TO ORDER Dave called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. VISITOR Sheri Miklaski, Library Director. PETITIONS TO THE CHAIR None APPROVE PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES Minutes of May 15, 2017 were approved . ADOPTIONS/CHANGES TO AGENDA None. APPROVAL OF BILLS Diane reported that she checked the bills again FINANCIAL REPORT Nothing to report. PRESIDENT'S REPORT None DIRECTOR'S REPORT Recent and upcoming events • Lots of school tours last month and this month. Also, Leslie and Diana went to talk to AMS students as a part of the 8th grade transition program with the AHS library staff. • Summer Reading! Kids and Adult Summer Reading sign-ups both went live on June 12th. There are three different types of log sheets for kids and five different ways to log activity for adults. Some ways to get"credit" include attending a city council meeting or picking up trash at a park. Facility • Shelving has been taken down in storage room to make way for the municipal fiber room. The false ceiling was removed in the portion that is to become the fiber room. Technology: • Upstairs public catalog computer bit the dust. It was under warrantee so Dell is replacing. • RB Digital goes live July 1st! We will be an early adopter of this new platform, which is a combination of One Click Digital (which we currently subscribe to) and Zinio (eMagazine platform that is new to us). Art Committee • Art Committee met on June 13th to discuss Independence, a Michael Stark lithograph that Ken Jacot wants to donate to the library. The Committee voted to accept the donation and suggested that it would be a nice addition to the Kids Room or to one of the study rooms. Library Staff: • Jeff and Diana will attend the American Library Association conference in Chicago from June 23 —27. • Sheri will attend the Northwest Corner Library Director meeting on Orcas on June 30th The Directors are all excited to see the expanded Orcas Island Library! • Sheri will attend the statewide Library Director meeting at the Dumas Bay Center in Federal Way on July 13 & 14. • Forty-two people applied for the Administrative Assistant position. Eight candidates were interviewed and two were called back for a second interview. Selah Bauer, who comes to us from the City of Valdez will start at the library on Monday, July 17th • The Mayor has a communications intern this summer who just finished her sophomore year at the University of Washington. She will be completing two short-term projects for the library. • Leslie Gina, and Ria will attend a mental health 1ST Aid training. • Library Staff meeting will be on Thursday, June 22nd Friends update: • Friends met on Tuesday, June 8th at 2:00pm. They will meet again in September. A new FriendShop volunteer attended the meeting. Library Foundation update: • Foundation fundraising committee met on June 6th meeting to discuss Links @ the Library: A mini golf experience. • Engraving of the four wall tiles looks great! A new batch for the next grouping of 6 bricks is being gathered. • Foundation next meets on Tuesday, June 20th Manieri update: • Scholarships to five students were awarded at the June 5th meeting. • Second Sunday series moved to the Heart of Anacortes this month with Ranger and the Re-Arrangers performing on June 11 th. The A Town Big Band will perform on July 9th • The Manieri Endowment will be underwriting the Jazz Stage at the Arts Festival again this year. Maritime update: • The October lecture date may be moved or cancelled to due meeting room work. There was a shift of the Large Print collection and the Maritime collection. Strategic Plan Update • Leslie and Diana had an activity station at the STEM event for 3 —6 years olds at AMS last month. We had our first"pop up library" and were able to check out books to families that stopped by. Thanks to Rossy for setting up the laptop to check out books! We will do it again at the Kids R Best Fest on July 8tn • HR is looking into contracting with an outside library HR expert to do a classification and compensation study in November/December of 2017. Family Place Library Update • Leslie and Diana presented to Soroptimists in May. They will apply for funding in their next grant cycle. • Leslie and Kids Room Staff had fun brainstorming ideas at their Kids Room Staff meeting on 6/13. Upcoming Library Closures: Independence Day—July 4th COMMITTEE REPORTS LIBRARY ART COMMITTEE • Met and accepted a painting. Location of placement to be determined. ADULT PROGRAMMING AND PUBLICITY COMMITTEE • Fall programs are set. REVIEW OF BOARD CALENDAR • Board Social was set for Thursday, July 20 ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 11:01 a.m. The next regular meeting of the Anacortes Public Library Board will take place on Monday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m. in the library at 1220 10th Street.
