PRESENT
Jim English,Nick Alphin, Judy Weathers, and Diane Munce.
CALL TO ORDER
Jim called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
VISITOR-STAFF INTRODUCTIONS
Sheri Miklaski, Library Director and Pauline Zollinger, Administrative Support.
PETITIONS TO THE CHAIR
None.
APPROVE PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES
Minutes of March 20, 2017 were approved as written.
ADOPTIONS/CHANGES TO AGENDA& AGENDA ADOPTION
None.
APPROVAL OF BILLS
Diane had checked the bills.
FINANCIAL REPORT
• No report.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Strategic Plan Progress:
• Programs and Services Improved Access Goal—
o Great feedback from patrons about our Hoopla service.
o New RFID pad has been ordered so we can try in house with a new Kids Room
self-check before we order more and head out into the community.
o "Departure"by Sabah will be arriving at the Library at the end of the month as part
of the Art Beyond Conflict show.
• Communications and Branding Goal—
o Look for a Library Annual Report and fun infographic in the upcoming A Town!
The Annual Report will have a small print run and will be available on our website.
• Space Planning and Utilization Goal—
o Meeting Room upgrade—Sheri had a Strategic Plan Update and Meeting Room
brainstorm with focus group attendees, library survey respondents, and stakeholders
on Friday and will host another at the conclusion of the Board meeting today.
o We are starting to gather data on the size of groups that use the library meeting
room to help inform our facility planning needs.
• Library Staffing and Professional Development Goal—
o Family Place Library training & implementation— Sheri and Leslie will attend the
training April 24—27.
o We will close for third annual In Service Day in October.
Technology:
• The city upgraded most of the library staff computers to Windows 10, which has led to
some unexpected conflicts and subsequent workflow disruptions with existing software and
hardware.
Friends update:
• Make sure to check out the Friends of the Library Spring newsletter.
• Friends met on Tuesday, April 13th at 2:00pm. Some FriendShop volunteers have RSVP'd
to the Library staff-hosted Volunteer Brunch.
Library Foundation update:
• Foundation fundraising committee cancelled their Tuesday, April 14th to discuss Caddy
Stacks event due to lack of pressing business and anticipated absences.
• Four lobby wall tiles to be engraved on an upcoming Thursday morning. Vendor will be
able to remove graffiti on two of the tiles as well.
• Foundation next meets on Tuesday, April 18th
Manieri update:
• Jazz lecture series continued on April 4th with Steve Dolmatz discussing"Hittin' on All
Six" about jazz guitarists. Next session will be on May 19th and will be the "History of the
Jazz Saxophone"with John Anderson.
• Bi-monthly Swing Dance happened on Saturday, April 15th at the Senior Center.
• Scholarship committee will be meeting to select recipients.
Maritime update:
• Maritime Committee helping the Anacortes Small Boat Center's fundraising efforts toward
funding of a sailing coach that will be on Parks and Rec's payroll.
Library Staff:
• Pauline Zollinger will be leaving the library after 20 years of dedicated service. Her last
day will be May 4th
• Library Staff meeting will be on Thursday, April20th. Changing up the usual agenda a bit.
Upcoming Library Closures:
• Memorial Day—May 29th
• Independence Day—July 4th
Selected Library Statistics: Were available at the meeting. Circulation numbers are up.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
LIBRARY ART COMMITTEE
• No report
ADULT PROGRAMMING AND PUBLICITY COMMITTEE
• The program schedule has been filling up and the programming committee has not needed to
meet.
MANIERI COMMITTEE
• See director's report.
MARITIME
• See director's report.
UPDATES
LIBRARY STAFF
• Leslie Wilson is doing great. Leslie is visiting the Samish Longhouse to do storytimes once a
month.
PASSPORT PROCESSING
• March was another record month for passport application executions.
• The Seattle passport office had checked in with Pauline to see how the library is handling the
increased number of applicants. If passport appointments start filling three weeks ahead,
passport services will try to find another local facility. Currently Saturday, a popular day, is
filling up with appointments two weeks ahead.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
• A financial report was provided.
• Funds were received from the morning Rotary to cover some of the costs of the Family Place
training and implementation.
• The Friends, who usually join the library's volunteer appreciation brunch, will provide their
own volunteer brunch next year.
FOUNDATION
• The next meeting takes place tomorrow.
• Diane reported on March's meeting.
o Investment accounts were reviewed.
o The fundraising event, miniature golf at the library, is starting to take shape.
• The new sound system is working great. There is a little buzzing caused by the library's
wiring.
REVIEW OF BOARD CALENDAR
• The volunteer brunch is scheduled for Saturday, April 22.
• The annual Board social was mentioned and will be discussed at the next meeting.

UPDATE ON FAMILY PLACE LIBRARY
• Sheri will have feedback from the Family Place training at the next meeting.
SPRING SPEAKER SERIES
• Gina has been making introductions. Sheri thought Gina would appreciate some help with that
if any trustees were interested.

The next regular meeting of the Anacortes Public Library Board will take place on Monday, May
15, at 10:00 a.m. in the library at 1220 10th Street.
