Proposed changes: You will note that our current deck has a wide main section joining a narrow section or "runway." We would appreciate your approval to widen the narrow section by 10 inches. This will increase the width of the runway from 4'2"to 5'. We would like to do this in order to create more useable space for planter boxes and to make it easier to clean windows and gutters. The footprint of the new main portion of the deck(to the southeast) will match that of the existing deck. The only other proposed change is an esthetic one,and whether we go ahead with it will depend on the cost. For the railing, we are considering rounding off all corners using bent (rounded)2" diameter steel tubing. If this is unduly expensive we will complete the corners at 90' and the runwayimain deck intersection at the large angles, as in the current deck. Materials: Foundation footings and supporting posts will be to code, or higher. For the deck surface, we plan to select from among a number of high-quality composite products. The color will be a shade of grey that matches or complements our recently painted house exterior. For the railing system, cost permitting,we envision a combination of round(2"diameter) steel posts and horizontal stainless steel cable similar to the arrangement in place on the main landing at Cap Sante Marina(opposite the large sculpture) in downtown Anacortes(the difference being that our vertical posts will be 2"pipe and not stainless steel). 1 May 10 11 09:29a J. Langley 360-588-0349 p.3 However, if this option proves too costly, we will use deck posts made of a composite, other synthetic, or perhaps even wood_ If one of these options is used, the horizontal stainless cable will be run through"space-age" plastic-like sleeves inserted into holes in the posts. If we use a composite, other synthetic or wood for the posts,they will be in a shade of white similar to that of our exterior window and other trim work. Two-inch steel posts, if used,will also be painted white. We have not yet solicited bids but will do so upon receipt of the Architectural Committee's approval. The contractor selected will, of course,be licensed and bonded, and will be expected to assist with coordinating all required inspections with the City of Anacortes.Kindly let us know whether your Committee requires any interim inspections as well. We have reviewed our deck plans with Duane and Myrna Eastman, our neighbors just northwest of us and Rachel Eastburn, immediately southeast of us.
