Hi Steve,
It is never okay to cut an I-joist flange without first checking. All of the bending stress is concentrated in the flanges.
Please remind your plumbers, electricians, and HVAC guys about this.
However, in this case you lucked out and are okay. The top flange is in compression and luckily was not cut all the way
through.Also,the floor diaphragm helps take the compression. Approved as-is.

Afternoon Tim ,
I just got my framing inspection and Grock happen to notice that the plumber cut some of the top flange on this I
joist .The flange measures 2
1/4 and the plumbers cut 1/2 out of it First question is, is that ok? Do I need to fix it .The cut is about 4 inches from
wall ? If I do have to fix, I was thinking of web filling the I joist from the cut/plumbing back to the hanger- roughly 15
inches on pipe side and put a 27 inch piece on the can light side of joist . Would that reinforce that end and help with
any lost strength.

The SDS in bottom plate is not required in mud sill on foundation.
Also, If the plywood horizontal joint does not fall at the bottom of the bottom plate, standard bottom
plate nailing can be used. Here is the new detail we're using but which may not be on the Massey plans.
Please call if still unclear.

Tim ,
This letter is to give a alternative to the shearwall schedule bottom plate nailing that is in the
approved set of plans for the Massey. If the plywood starts on the mud sill and carry's thru to break
halfway on a top plate or on the rim for the second floor and then continue's to top plate of second
floor or the plywood breaks on the top plate for a single story home.
Then the requirement for SDS screws In the plate will be omitted.
