HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-09-08 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved (2) Board of Trustees’ Meeting Minutes September 8, 2025 9:00 AM Board of Trustees Attendees: Alethea Fleming, Briana Alzola Lindquist, Mike VanQuickenborne, Jhana Shimizu, Courtney Orrock Absent: None Library Attendees: Jeff Vogel, Trish Wilson, Stacy Paull, Diana Farnsworth Absent: Michelle Hanna Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9 AM by Alethea. Approval of Minutes Minutes from August 2025 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Courtney, seconded by Jhana. Manager Updates Jeff • Will be at the City Council meeting tonight. • Budget is due September 22, it looks fairly straightforward. • Trying to surplus some tables and chairs. • All hands CPR training on the morning of September 25. • A local author submitted a book for the collection, but the library declined to add it to the collection. The author is upset and has filed a records request with the city. The library doesn’t add a lot of local authors, as any book additions must follow the collection development policies as already laid out. Trish • Adult programs continue apace, such as an author reading with costumed characters and the adult book swap will happen this week. • The library will also be represented at the upcoming Senior resource fair. • September 27 will see the Madrona Poetry series will take over the library with live music and Tess Gallagher reading. (Possibly a teen poet as well.) • The summer adult reading program had higher participation this year than previous years. Stacy • Fall children’s programming slate is set for the rest of the calendar year. • Kids are checking out STEM backpacks. Diana • Half the teen space is available now. • Teen creative writing starts up later in September. • There were more teens signed up for summer reading. • The Haunted library will be happening with volunteer opportunities available for Board members/adults and teens. • Working on getting quotes for more shelves in the teen area, and will look into a laptop bar. Partnership Updates • Foundation: $19,484 with a $20,000 match and are exploring adding an assistant bookkeeper. • Friends: Getting ready to start their annual appeal General Updates • September 30 from 6-7 PM the Board will host a private party for the Foundation and Friends to show off the teen space. (The plan is to do a public celebration of the Teen space later in the year.) Courtney will pick up beverages and we will also have snacks. • We reviewed the proposed Social Media Policy. We added “and APL affiliated” to the sentence including the phrase “APL social media accounts” in the Purpose & Scope section so that it now reads “APL and APL affiliated social media accounts”. Courtney moved and Briana seconded the change and then we unanimously approved the policy as amended. • We then reviewed and voted on library card designs for children’s and adult cards. • Finally, Alethea brought up the date of our next meeting, which happens to fall on Indigenous People’s day. If the library were to be closed on that day, we would change the date, but we don’t anticipate that it will be closed. The meeting was adjourned by Alethea at 9:40 The next meeting is (likely) October 13 at the Library.
