Thank you, Don Measamer City of Anacortes Assistant Director, Planning & Community Development, Building Official Don@cityofanacortes.org Phone 360.293.1901 Fax 360.293.1938 From: Mark Christ [mailto:mark@markchrist.com] Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2010 3:09 PM To: Casey Dixon Cc: Measamer, Don Subject: 2 hour rating at brick veneer Hi Casey, RE: 2 hour exterior wall at the clock tower base. You asked: Are we required to have the (2) layers 5/8"type X Gypsum sheathing where the exterior finish is brick veneer? As is often the case, it is hard to find an exact match of a tested assembly. But I came very close. Attached please find a PDF of GA file WP8410. It calls for (2) layers 5/8"type X GWB on the inside face of the studs. It calls for(1) layer 1/2" non-rated gypsum sheathing on the exterior face of the studs; with a brick veneer over that. This will give you a 2 hour fire rating. We cannot use 1/2" non-rated gypsum sheathing because we need the shear capacity of the 15/32" PWD sheathing. However, being that neither the gypsum sheathing or the PWD sheathing are rated; I am comfortable assuming that the PWD can be used in lieu of the gypsum sheathing and still retain the 2 hour fire rating. However, please run this by Don Measamer for his approval. Please note: this detail is limited to the 1 st floor of the clock tower where the exterior finish is brick veneer for the full height of the wall.
