Questions: I have an R-2 occupancy that is VA construction. Per Table 601 and 602 the exterior
walls are required to be 1 hour fire rated construction. The exterior walls have a fire separation
distance greater than 5 feet. Do the fire-resistance rating for the walls have to be from both
sides—the interior side and the exterior side?
Answers: No, the exterior walls with fire separation distances of 5 feet or greater need only be
rated from the interior side of the wall.

Code Reference: 2006 IBC Handbook Section 704.5. "For fire separation distances greater than 5 feet
the hazard is consudered to be predominantly form the inside of the building. See figure 704-9. Thus,
fire resistance rated construction whose tests are limited to interior fire exposure is considered
sufficient evidence of adequate fire resistance under these circumstances." "It should be noted that
this allowance is applicable regardless of why the wall requires a fire rating."
