Per Table 601 and 602 the exterior walls are required to be 1 hour fire rated construction. The exterior walls have a fire separation distance greater than 5 feet. Do the fire-resistance rating for the walls have to be from both sides—the interior side and the exterior side? Answers: No, the exterior walls with fire separation distances of 5 feet or greater need only be rated from the interior side of the wall. This opinion is based on the information which you have provided.
