Dear Don,
A question has been raised regarding the siding used at the project. The product is I-Iardiplank
exterior siding as manufactured by James Hardie Co. Attached is a portion of the
specii'ications front Sweets Catalogue. The catalogue refers to NER-405 which outlines the
attachment and shear capabilities of the product.
The issue is in relationship to the product and UBC 2317.8, which requirws 6 i0clxs separation
between wood and earth.
As the product literature indicates, Hardiplank contains pordami cement. ground sa<ld, and
cellulose fiber, selected additives and water. The produce also indicates that it is immune to
water dam-age.
It is my understanding that the 6 inch separation was used to protect wood from rot and other
water related damage. It is my understanding, and experience, that Hardipiank does not have
a problem with contact with either dirt or concrete slab issues.

Dear Don, -
In regards to the attached fax from Ward-Johnson Masonry regarding minor revisions to the
brick detail, attached please find the subcontractor's proposal.
I do not have any problems with the revisions, as long as weep holes are installed to allow the
moisture to migrate out of the cavity.
