WA 93221 RE: Ana ortes Senior HousSilg Ailey Rockery/Barricade Dear lion, Asper our discussion, a barricade will be installed along the rockery in the north alley of the proiect. Attached to this letter is a drawing showing the construction of the barricade. Mr. Dean Wilson, PE has reviewed the rockery, and will send to you under separate cover, probably fax, the determinatioah. He verbally told me that the rockery was satisfactory to carry the loads we discussed. We are going to construct the barricade out of nnetal. railing, due to the space constraints upon the location. As we discussed, 1 had the surveyor return to the project and restate the corners. They are there for your review. Please review as soon as practical. We would like to install as soon as possible. Sincerely, David Haynes Architect Enclosures JUL o 0 1997 ice'. .--'-"--'--.."-- '---....---'-- --'---- --...._...-----'--- David n. Haynes, Fegislemd Archileel. Don Measamer Building Inspector. CI p rye City of Anacortes. • W P. O. Box 547. Anacortes. Washington 98221. Subject. Anacortes Senior Housing. ' Dear Mr. Measanter: ICI The Contractor informed me that a rockery adjacent to the alley was in question. Specifically, the question was whether the rockery was able to support the vVelght of a City owned garbage truck weighing some 20.000 Lbs. The truck has AASHTO 1115.44 loading, which means the front axle has an applied loading of 6,000 Lbs•, and the rear axle has an applied loading of 24.000 Lbs. Therefore maximum wheel loading is 12.000 Lbs. A somewhat modified application of boussinesq ailows the use of a trapezoidal loading near the bottom .8 Ft. of the retained earth. Since the rockery is set into the grade by about 1 FL it total load is based upon 1,8 Ft. at the bottom of the rockery. A set of calculations is included herein for your review. The area of the tire tread applying the load to the pavement is based upon a rectangular foot print of 8-' X 10" for both tires. It is somewhat more conservative to assurno the overlap of pressure as being additive. Therefore. I have used a factor of 2 for the applied pressure. A dotail of the rockery was furnished the Contractor. The rockery has a safety factor against overturning of slightly over 1.5 and 1.5 for sliding. The rockery appears to be adequate for the back till and applied H15-44 loading.
