Re: Automatic Fire Alarm-Dated January 7,2000
Dear Joe,
The fire department responded this morning to an automatic fire alarm for the East ALF building. The
alarm was appropriate for event that occurred. The event was the result of melting cellophane food wrap
on top of some food canisters being warmed in the oven. Apparently the ovens were too warm for the
product. Please review the product being used and consider using an alternative such as metal canister
lids. The event was self-limiting but probably could have been avoided with having metal lids inplace.
I also noted during my visit that the fire rated doors which separate the dining area from the TV viewing
area were wedged open. These self-closing doors are required to be maintained in the closed position in - ..
order provide the fire protection they were designed for. If your staff and residents need to have these
doors open due to safety needs and normal operational requirements, then they need to be provided with
magnetic door holders and connected to the alarm system. Then they would close in the event of a fire or
when an alarm is initiated.
Please notify me of your plan for resolving these two issues. A letter would be of value for our records.
Thank you for your time. Your staff appears to be providing good care.
Respectfully,
k
