HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-02-10 Library Board of Trustees Minutes ApprovedANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees’ Meeting February 10, 2025 9 a.m. in APL Community Meeting Room and on Zoom Attendees: From the Board: Briana Alzola Lindquist, Alethea Fleming, Mike VanQuickenborne, Courtney Orrock, Jhana Shimizu (via Zoom) From the staff: Jeff Vogel, Diana Farnsworth, Stacy Paull, Sydney Brady, Trish Wilson • The meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. by Courtney. • Jeff took the board on a tour of the teen area of the library. Construction is underway and the section is empty of items and blocked to library patrons. Things are going well, though they have slowed down a little as a results of supply change issues, Jeff said. The area expands the teen area quite a bit and will also feature a maker space. Study Room A will be included in the new teen section and the team is looking into more soundproofing solutions to make sure the noise doesn’t bother other patrons. o Right now, the books from the teen section are spread out through nonfiction. Sydney and Sid, the head page, will work on moving nonfiction (thanks to weeding by Trish) to put these books all together, if they have time. o The team hopes that the teen section will be back open in April or May. • Jeff ’s updates: o Consortium talk is continuing. Jeff plans to meet with the other library directors next week. The director from Central Skagit, who was driving much of the work, left the library, so there was a bit of a slowdown. § Jeff recently met with the city attorney to talk about many of the different factors of taking on the consortium work. o The maritime section has the shelving installed and is looking great. o Re: the patron privacy policy, no updates on this specifically, but staff is creating a plan to look at all policies for updates. • Diana’s updates: o Things are a little on hold now with the work on the teen section, though teens are looking forward to offering some thoughts on the new space. § D&D is starting back up soon and will meet once a month. § The writing group continues and is a lot of fun for those who attend. • Stacy’s updates: o Things are busy in the children’s department, with work already starting on summer reading. § Stacy is working on booking performers, including some that will be new to the library. o Soon, a Zoom program will start up. “The Emotional Life of a Young Child: Learn about the social and emotional world of children aged birth to five” is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 19 and 26 (timed to be during naptime). Registration is open now. o Family Place Play and Learn will start up again in April and May. o There is a new escape room camp this week (since students at the school district are on half day). The new escape room should be available next week. o Stacy is starting a process of categorizing all the library’s picture books. This will be a long, slow process as it also includes weeding. o The paint on the boat is chipping. Stacy is exploring options on how to best treat and paint it so this doesn’t happen again. • Trish’s updates: o Events are starting up a little slow, likely because of the cold weather and the snow. o More fun things are planned coming up! § Trish and Stacy are working together on a craft night that will allow patrons to help create accessible book kits for the children’s section. § DW Ulsterman is launching his next book at the library this month. The last event by this author saw huge numbers. o The Love at First Page (a new name for Blind Date With a Book) was very successful, with only one book left out of 40 as of 2/10. o Trish is working on a cleaning up the ILS of old and lost books. That way, things are up-to-date in the case the library does join the consortium and switches ILS. It’s also good to keep everything up-to-date. • Sydney’s updates: o The library has 61 active volunteers, including those at the FriendShop. Sydney and other leaders are working to make sure all volunteers have completed an application form and gone through a background check, which can be expensive. § Some people have been volunteers a very long time, so their applications and checks may be in older formats, so the team is looking through all files before paying for another check for those people.
