HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-07-08 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved Board of Trustees’ Meeting Minutes July 8, 2024 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees: John Shafer, Courtney Orrock, Briana Alzola Lindquist, Alethea Fleming Library Attendees: Michelle Hanna, Stacy Paull, Trish Wilson, Diana Farnsworth Absent: Sydney Brady, Jeff Vogel Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Courtney. Approval of Minutes Minutes from June 2024 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Briana, second by Alethea. Manager Updates Diana • The teen area is still delayed in the contracts department at City Hall. Once they finish making changes and approve it, the request for bids will go out publicly. • The Teens are meeting at Sugar Mama Café this month. • The A’Town Fall issue deadline is this week • The Pride Parade was great – the APL teens want to have more presence next year. Stacy • The shift of books in the Children’s library is complete! • Summer programs have officially kicked off but believe it or not, we’re already talking about fall planning. • The Scavenger Hunt was a great success with 75 people participating. • We’re adding books to the collection with a disability focus, such as dyslexia and large print. In addition, we’ll be adding adaptive books that will include altered picture books to add texture and extra features to help the story be understood by those with visual or other challenges. • Burt the Therapy dog attended storytime last weekend and was very well received. He’ll be coming back regularly, by popular demand. Trish • Adult Summer Reading has started off strong. • The Wednesday adult programs in July are: o Collage Workshop at the Creative Hub o Barbie Party o Trivia Night at Sugar Mama’s o Game Night with pizza and snacks o And ongoing scavenger hunts • ALA: one of many great seminars was on collection size and organization. Trish is excited to see which ideas can be applied here. • MidWest Tapes (a division of Hoopla) offers physical items as well as digital so we may purchase some movies from them soon. Partnership Updates • Foundation (John) o The foundation is looking for a bookkeeper to replace the current company. Their fees have been high and they are going to stop bookkeeping services by the end of the year. The Friends are also looking for bookkeeping services so both groups may share information and possibly share the services of the same company/individual. o The teen area bid was approved and capped at $290k. o A donation that was made many years ago to the City specifically for the Library has been transferred to the Foundation’s accounts for management. • Friends of the Library (Courtney) o In addition to looking for a bookkeeper, they are also talking about replacing the Treasurer when they choose to retire. o There will be a big book sale during the Arts Festival weekend (August 2-4). o The lobby displays are being updated. o Jhana, a former library assistant, is volunteering with the Friends and helping with their marketing. • Manieri o The Arts Festival jazz stage is set with 11 great local-ish groups that will play from Friday evening through Sunday evening. o Second Sunday artists are booked through the fall. o Jazz Lectures are set and booked through the end of the year. • Maritime o The new Maritime shelving has been delayed by 2 weeks due to a supply issue. Ongoing Business • The consortium agreements are still stalled in the City’s legal/contracts department. • Board member vacancy: no new news New Business ALA recap (Diana, Stacy, Trish) There were so many fantastic presentations, including: • Trevor Noah • Information security and IT • Strong passwords, and data backup • Data analysis/sharing resources (Trish attended with Melissa from Central Skagit Library) focusing on resource sharing/how many copies of a book each library would need when the consortium is running. • Career-connected learning • Adaptive reading • WA youth detention system • Challenges and policies New City email addresses • The City has changed all email addresses to end with @anacorteswa.gov because .gov offers higher security. • Cooling Center: The Library is a designated cooling center, which means it will be kept at 68 degrees during open hours and all are welcome to come in and cool off from the heat outside. The meeting was closed by Courtney at 10 a.m. The next meeting is August 12 at 9 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room.
