Manager Updates
Jeff
• The draft of the teen area remodel Request for Proposal (RFP) is going to the City lawyer this week.
It should go out for bid in early July.
• In addition to the RFP, Jeff will also be talking to the City lawyer regarding the consortium/interlocal
agreement proposals.
• This Thursday is the Council/Mayor/Directors budget retreat. Jeff will present a draft of the
consortium agreement. He is hopeful that the WA State Library will have funds to help cover part of
the cost of migration to a new ILS system. We will also consider asking the County to assist in the
ongoing transportation costs associated with the new consortium. The APL budget impact is
projected to be an increase of approximately $20,000 annually over the next 5 years.
• Budget proposals for next year from City departments are expected to be flat again.
• The ALA conference is in San Diego at the end of June. All managers will be attending from June 28-
July 1. Bret Lunsford (Museum Director) will be available for manager duties as needed.
• We’re doing a Spring Clean in the Library during June and July. We’ll have a “show and tell” at our July
staff meeting of the oddest/most interesting item found during the process.
• We have received 2 applications for the open board member position. Jeff will be reviewing them
this week.
• The new furniture for the teen area was delivered and set up. Study Room A has a new table and
chairs and now seats 4 people instead of 6.
• We have 2 new staff members who are in training and doing well: Max is our new temporary page and
Angela is our new Library Assistant.
Stacy
• The Children’s area Code of Conduct is updated, finalized, and being shared.
• Summer Reading is coming! July 8 through August 31. There is a jam-packed calendar of activities
planned (available at the Children’s desk). Reading logs will be available on June 15 and have also
been distributed to the schools.
• We are having a library card design contest! 3 designs will be chosen, one each for Adults, Teens,
and Children. The Library staff and the Anacortes Arts Council will choose the top 5 designs from
each age group and they will go to a public vote for the final design.
• We will have a new addition to the Library Team! Burt the therapy dog will come a couple times a
month (with his handler, Linda) to listen to kids read to him. He will also participate in Summer
Reading events.
• Stacy is updating job descriptions in the Children’s area and adjusting the Children’s office desk and
workspace.
Trish
• The Scavenger Hunt on June 1 went very well. This one was designed for adults, but there will be
more throughout the summer for all ages.
• This Saturday Transition Fidalgo is hosting a repair clinic in the Community Meeting Room.
• Don’t forget – fill out your summer reading log to get a free book!
• Trish distributed Board Member buttons/pins for the trustees to wear when attending events as
library representatives. Similar buttons are also available for the Foundation and Friends.
• Music in the Library is happening today. Our piano player Dave comes about once a month and plays
the piano from 5-5:30 p.m.
• Tech services has finished the teen genre re-labeling project, with the small exception of a few
books that have been checked out during this process. Those will be relabeled as they are returned
to the Library.
• Spring Cleaning in tech services means purging old, worn, and surplus equipment and supplies.
• We did not receive the grant we requested from Rotary for mobile workstations around the Library
so Trish is working on other solutions that will allow staff to work in other locations throughout the
library as needed.
Partnership Updates
• Foundation (John)
o The Foundation is improving their invoicing system for the credit card charges.
o They are looking for a replacement accountant/bookkeeper.
o They voted to increase the funding from $3,000 to $5,500 for the Waterfront Alliance
sailing coach.
• Friends of the Library (Courtney)
o The FOL book sale was last weekend and although we don’t have exact figures yet, it
appeared to be popular.
o The Friends are also looking for a new bookkeeper, so they may work with the Foundation on
their search for the right fit.
o The Finance committee is meeting regularly and has been talking about the eventual
transition of duties and information needed when the current Treasurer retires.
• Manieri
o Manieri awarded a $2,000 scholarship to one recipient last week.
o Second Sundays continue throughout the summer at the Heart of Anacortes.
o The Anacortes Arts Festival Jazz Stage has been scheduled with 11 fabulous jazz groups.
