HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-05-13 Library Board of Trustees Minutes Approved ANACORTES PUBLIC LIBRARY Board of Trustees' Meeting Minutes May 13,2024 9:00 am Board of Trustees Attendees:John Shafer,Courtney Orrock, Alethea Fleming, Briana Alzola Lindquist Library Attendees: Michelle Hanna, Stacy Paull, Jeff Vogel,Trish Wilson Absent:Sydney Brady, Diana Farnsworth, Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 8:58 a.m. by Courtney. Approval of Minutes Minutes from April 2024 meeting were approved. Motion for approval by Briana, second by John.. Manager Updates Jeff • The Skagit Consortium group met recently. Budget estimates are significantly higher than expected. There will be another consortium meeting tomorrow(Tuesday)to discuss. Some of the unexpectedly higher expenses include the cost of the ILS and migration, transportation of loaned books, and staff costs.An upcoming meeting will include discussion of whether an across-the- board split of the costs is reasonable when considering the different needs of each member library. • We have a new library assistant, Angela, who started last week. Training is going well. We will have a new page starting later this week to fill our 3 month temporary position. • We may need to write an MOU before putting the teen area out for bidding. • There will be a budget retreat on June 13 between City Council and the department heads. Jeff will be preparing the budget numbers for the ILS/Migration/etc. before the retreat. • The Maritime area is getting new shelving in the near future. The slatwall and acrylics are not holding up well to the maritime books so we will be replacing it with mahogany shelves. The cost was covered by an anonymous donation. • We will be painting the study rooms soon. • Facilities has posted new signage indicating the open and closed hours of the Library grounds. This will allow the police to ask uninvited guests to leave the grounds during our closed hours (10 P.M. to 5 a.m.). • The Board of Trustees open position has been posted and will remain open until filled. Jeff will review applications as they are received. Stacy • We are updating the Children's Safety policy. • We are moving the non-fiction books around to increase access and visibility to the books. • We had a great event on Saturday with Lucky Diaz. Over 110 people attended. • Summer Reading will be from July 6 through the end of August. We will have 7 Wednesday performances and more tween camps than previous years. • There will be an art contest for new youth library card designs. • Family Place continues to be a strong, well-attended program. Trish • May programs are going strong. The Mayor Q&A session went well. Upcoming programs include Avoiding Common Scams by Brent Lindquist, Stomp &Shout with Peter Blecha, and Women of Anacortes, celebrating the impact and legacy of women on Fidalgo Island. • The Maritime program last Saturday had 62 attendees. • Adult Summer Reading planning is under way. • Trish is collaborating with the new Creative Hub space downtown for Adult Crafts programs. • In Tech Services, the Teen genre project is taking up most of their time. That project should be finishing up in the next week or two. Partnership Updates • Foundation (John) o The Teen area quote came in at an acceptable price so the foundation voted to open it up for bids. 0 2 wall tiles and 3 bricks were installed in the last month. o The Anacortes Waterfront Alliance requested funding for middle school students. The foundation tabled that discussion until the next meeting. • Friends of the Library(Courtney) o The FriendShop is having a May sale on self help books to coincide with Mental Health Awareness month. o Lots of books are coming to the FriendShop from the Library as the librarians continue their weeding and purging. o Nancy Fisher-Allison was voted in as the new secretary of the Friends of the Library upon the resignation of the previous secretary. o Courtney volunteered tojoin the FOL finance committee. o The Friends continue to discuss the merits of member-based vs volunteer-based. Currently, members pay$10 per year for membership status. The • Manieri (Michelle) o Second Sunday Jazz and Jazz Lectures continue to be well attended. After this month's lecture there will be a break until September. Second Sunday concerts will continue all summer. o Vince is booking artists for the Arts Festival jazz stage. o Scholarships are being awarded and will be presented at the June meeting. • Briana enjoyed representing the Library at the Earth Day booth and at the Lucky Diaz concert. The meeting was closed by Courtney at 9:30 a.m. The next meeting is June 10 at 9 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room.
